One New Thing...

I actually have two new things to report this week.

New Thing One:

At Christmas Middle Son gifted us a box of goodies he curated from Imperfect Foods.   It came the week after Christmas, with meats in an insulated bag with a cold pack:

Unpacked, this was what the box contained:

There were several new-to-us things in the box, but the most delicious were 2 filet mignon steaks (from grass fed cows) - they must have been swept into the fridge before the above picture was snapped.   Mmmmm...  They were melt-in-your-mouth delicious, and I think it might have been the first time we've eaten that tender of a cut of beef.  It was definitely our first taste of grass-fed beef.

With the gift came an offer from Imperfect Foods of $20.00 off the first four orders we placed (if we should decide to do so).  We decided to give it a whirl, and we received our third order this past week.   I've ordered some new-to-me things each time, but this week the most interesting new thing I ordered was a dragonfruit:

I let it sit for a couple of days, 'till I was pretty confident the insides were the right amount of softness (based on the squeeze & press test).  I've read online that these fruits do not ripen after picking, so they are picked as close to ultimate ripeness as possible.  And some people say the fruit grows sweeter after it's picked and sits for several days. Not knowing who was right (or if both are technically right), figuring this fruit might have been close to a week old by the time I made the decision to cut into it, I was reluctant to put off eating it too long for fear that it might go bad.

So...  Thursday, with much anticipation, I cut it open

and we had a taste.

I don't think the color of the plate above enhances this fruit at all, but aside from that, we remained intrigued to try this.

The verdict?

For how exciting this fruit looks on the outside, the taste was pretty underwhelming.  I've read descriptions of this type of dragon fruit tasting between a watermelon and a kiwi.  Or a pear and a kiwi.  I'd have to say something much less than a pear or kiwi, but ever so mildly like those two things comes closest to what this one tasted like.

It was kind of disappointing, and maybe we ate a slightly underripe dragonfruit, but with these being pretty pricey, I'm thinking this will be our last (and lasting) impression of this very impressive looking, but underwhelming tasting fruit.

New Thing Two:

This may particularly interest my fellow Blogger bloggers.  I think it was last summer, that we all lost our follow-by-email widgets from our blogs.   While I was disappointed this happened, with all that was going on in my world I didn't have the mental bandwidth to care too much about it.  That is, until one of my sisters discovered I had a blog and asked last week if there was a way to follow my blog by email.  Suddenly, I was motivated to do the thing I hadn't been motivated to do for months.

I did a little searching and found a free web feed subscription service in follow.it  and put a widget at the top of my sidebar.  I may move it down at some point, but I wanted to make it easy for anyone reading today to find it if interested.

I'm sharing this with you because 1)  it is a new thing, and 2) if you had been previously following my blog by email (through the original widget that was provided by Feedburner), you may receive (or may have received) an e-mail from follow.it offering you the opportunity to follow my blog through them.   If you are already receiving my blog posts through email, you may not want to do anything different.  I'm pretty sure I wouldn't.  I just want to let you know you may receive an email from follow.it and to let you know why.

And if you want to start following my blog by email, it is as simple as plugging your email into the widget and hitting subscribe. Another way to subscribe to my blog through follow.it is to create a follow.it account, find my blog in their database, and follow me that way.

You may be wondering why you'd go to that trouble.  To be honest, I wouldn't, but you may care about these things:

  • If you subscribe using the widget, while I don't see anyone's name, I am made privy to your email address.  I promise you, I will never make use of your email address, unless you are a regular commenter and I think you might welcome a private email from me.  But seriously, I would imagine that situation would be rare, if it ever did happen.  I also don't plan to keep serious track of who may be following me.  Or who may chose to unfollow me.  It's just not something I'm into.

  • If you create a follow.it account, and find me in their database and subscribe that way, your email address is kept private from me.   The other advantage you would have in creating a free follow.it account is that you can subscribe to various other news feeds, blogs, and I honestly don't know what all...  and keep track of your subscriptions there.

That's as much as I know at this point.  If you chose to use the widget to follow me by email, I'd love to hear any feedback you might have about the experience.  I doubt I can control anything, but knowing if readers are happy or not with it, will certainly help me know if it's a good service.  I subscribed to my own blog, and found it simple to do, and it works well for me.  But if you have a different experience, please let me know.

And that's all for this week!

I think that's 10 new things in 2022!

  1. Looks like great goodies came in your box and I have to say that I love dragon fruit, although I do agree that it's not highly flavoured. We have an Asian daughter-in-love and she introduced us to them.
As for following - I subscribe to you (and all my blogging world) via Inoreader. I think there's only one blog that I receive via email and I haven't a clue how that happened. I run into very rare blogs that I can't subscribe to so this system works for me.

    1. Thank you for sharing that, Mary Anne. I'd never heard of Inoreader. I know some Blogger bloggers use Bloglovin'. I keep track of blogs I want to follow by putting them in my sidebar. A few specialty blogs, I follow by e-mail. Email is my preferred method as I know I'd never check into a site like follow.it or Inoreader or Bloglovin' to keep up in any regular way with blogs. I need to have it appear automatically right in front of my eyes. While I drug my feet finding another follow by e-mail service, I love when I find them on others' blogs.

  2. Becki, we have been using a boxed meal service (Hello Fresh)for about 6 months now for at least three meals a week. The meals have overwhelmingly been very good and not the sort of things that we would have thought to cook ourselves. It is a little pricey and it does discourage having other ready to cook materials in the house (in case the Hello Fresh order does not show up or something like a power outage happens) so we have backed off a bit. It certainly has expanded our gustatory repertoire.

    1. TB, when I see the commercials for Hello Fresh, I do find the idea intriguing. I collect so many spices and bottles of things I only use a little of, the idea of receiving only what I'd need to make a meal sounds like a very good idea. I appreciate the possible downside, too. Thank you for sharing this.

  3. I tried dragon fruit once and was totally underwhelmed also. No need for me to try again. Thanks for the info on the widget. I follow most of my blogs via Bloglovin.com. I do know many of my followers would prefer to be notified via email though. I am now off to research imperfect foods.

    1. I was hesitant to write this above (for several reasons), but I'm not sure we'll keep our subscription to Imperfect Foods once our special offer runs out. I think I can get the same if not slightly better prices for similar things I can buy at the grocery store - and I enjoy grocery shopping, so getting something delivered doesn't feel like a big advantage to me. If you (or anyone reading this) would like the benefit of $20.00 off the first four orders - just to try it, I'd be happy to be your referral. You'd have to let me know before you create an account, though. Just let me know, Marsha. No pressure. I'm just not sure they make that offer without a referral.

  4. That box looks intriguing lots of good things in there, my son gifted me a Hello Fresh box once and I did try it for a while but being on my own it wasn't cost effective. I have never tried Dragon fruit before and I don't think I will either it doesn't sound that appetising. I have been using follow.it for a while but I'm not sure if anyone takes advantage of it. Ten new things is amazing, it's only February. Have a lovely Sunday. xx

    1. I think, in the end, the cost would probably keep me from doing it (beyond a test run, if I do). But I know others who do use it (or a similar service) and they are super happy with it. And I can certainly imagine situations where I'd do it in a heartbeat (if shopping was difficult for me, or I hated grocery shopping - which I don't). In the end, I'm thrilled that new businesses continue to spring up and provide jobs. If boxes weren't heavy, I can imagine enjoying being a delivery person in nice weather - lol. We found out last week, our Imperfect Foods boxes come from Indianapolis - just up the road from us. I wonder if they hire fair weather employees. :)

If people only use the button to subscribe (I know I always look for one), then follow.it has served its purpose for me and the subscriber. I probably wouldn't even have mentioned that I added the button except that 1) it's a new thing and 2) because I was told any followers by email I already have will probably receive an email inviting them to use follow.it. I didn't want those readers to be confused since they were already getting my blog posts be e-mail.

  5. You're definitely into new things! I've seen Dragon fruit at our local Asian store, but haven't tried it, a bit pricey.

I like reading your pleasure in unboxing the food box.

About Hello Fresh, my neighbor who's a good cook tried it, but realized how much he uses extras and leftovers, and there weren't any! Like me, he cooks with several ideas in mind. He did say the quality was very good though.

    1. I thought of you when I received it, Liz. I know the company is a different one than you use, but I was tickled I could experience what you share with your readers. We eat leftovers, too. When I am able, I cook extra (not hard now that I'm only cooking for two) because leftovers is the best part of cooking. :) And if I'm say, browning meat for chili, I'll cook up extra and freeze it so I have browned ground beef ready to go for something like tacos. My upright freezer is usually at least a third filled with leftovers, or prepared parts of some other dish I can make in the future.

  6. Good to know about Dragon fruit.
Following service, I also let the change slide by without doing anything. On Blogger, the blog email notices I receive, usually arrive after I have read and commented on the blog already. I use the Blogger follow option if I see one.

  7. Yeah, dragon fruit doesn't have a lot of flavor. I tried it once; my SIL had some and cut one up for us. I've seen Imperfect Foods around IG; what a good idea to not waste food with imperfect looking foods that stores or farms generally will not sell.

    1. There is some controversy about how much companies like Imperfect Foods really do save produce from going to waste. I haven't researched it extensively, and even if I had, it's much too complicated to write about it in a comment, but if that is a motivation for considering it, I suggest reading up on it.

  8. Oh my. A filet mignon is about as tasty a steak as can be. As for blog following, I use Feedly to follow all the blogs I follow. It works for me and is also free.

  9. A couple of years ago I tried Dragonfruit and had the same underwhelmed thoughts that led to your conclusions. It's much more exciting on the outside and disappointing on the inside. Now we know.

    1. Hi Barbara! A funny fruit that excites the eye so, but underwhelms the palate.

  10. I wonder if dragon fruit doesn’t travel well. We had it in Sri Lanka and the Maldives and it was delicious, very like a sweeter version of a kiwi. I don’t like pears so didn’t pick any pear like flavour or texture. Mind you sometimes you get an orange or a raspberry that makes you wince with the sharpness and other times they are sweet and delicious, but they are considerably cheaper so we don’t notice so much a bad batch. I have continued to receive via email yours and Marsh’s blog posts by emails since 2018. For some reason I never successfully did this with Lucy or Sam’s.

    1. That's a good question, Liz. This one came from Ecuador, FWIW. You also make a good point. The first time I tried a Cara Cara orange I wasn't impressed, but I figured it was just that one - they are so raved about. I gave them another go and I finally found out what all the excitement was about. I find them hard to peel, but so worth the trouble. In general, I'm not drawn to buy oranges, but when these are available and affordable, I snap them up.

  11. Your box of Imperfect Foods is intriguing and certainly seems worth a try. I had a similar reaction to dragonfruit when I tried it. It did not live up to its flamboyant outside!

I still follow blogs that I want to read through my Blogger dashboard. Very old school I suppose, but I am so UN-techie.

    1. lol. Here I thought e-mail was the "old school" way of following blogs. :)

  12. I lost an entire comment here so won't try to replicate it. I follow a couple blogs using follow.it, but honestly, the extra emails are sort of a nuisance when I already see new posts in my very own sidebar. However, I don't know how my readers feel about the follow by email option. Guess I will have to ask.

Your food box looked like so much fun! Filet mignon -- wow! That pecan pie looked interesting too as well as some of the other fun things. I will know now not to be tempted to buy dragonfruit ...

    1. I'm glad there are options for following blogs. Some I prefer to get updates in my sidebar, and some I prefer to receive emails for. Do you realize you can unsubscribed from the e-mails, Mrs. T? I just checked the e-mail I get from follow.it, and there is an "unfollow" option on the right side of the e-mail (about level with the title of my blog name). It's not very noticeable, but hopefully you can find it if you're interested in that.

Re: dragonfruit... I'm starting to feel a little bad that I've evidently turned some people off from trying dragonfruit. I really don't think it's worth the cost, but if it were offered to me, I'd try it again - just to see if I happened to eat a less ripe one.

  13. Hi Beck, Sister Sherri here. I'm so glad you went to the trouble to set up Follow up. I should have been following your blog from the beginning. It is so very well written and a great way to keep up with family you don't get to see often. That was an awesome gift your from Joel and it sounds like you made good creative use of it. I agree with you about grass-fed beef and it is the only kind I eat. You can get it at Aldi's reasonably. I have a common grill 50 feet from my door and I like to grill the New York strips out there. I've marinated and served it when friends come over as well. I have a prepared food service that I have delivered once a week - 4 fully prepared meals. They are organic and nutritious and have always been delicious. I'm charged $60 for 4 meals including and tax and delivery charges. The company is called Factor. They give me a code to share for a free box of 4 meals ever so often if you or any of your readers would like the code, let me know.

    1. Sherri, I'm glad you gave me the motivation to find a subscribe by email service for my blog after Blogger dropped the service last year.

I think I bought some grass fed strip steaks in an earlier box. They are in the large freezer for now. With the discount on these early boxes, they were almost affordable. 😆 I've seen grass fed beef at Kroger, and Meijer probably carries it. I don't think I would have thought to check at Aldi. Thanks for the tip!

  14. What a lovely and thoughtful thing for your son to do. It certainly gave you a chance to eat delicious food and not so delicious, new to you, fruit. And you entertained us with another of your very interesting (New To You) blog posts. Have a great day my bloggy friend!💖

    1. It was a fun (and generous) gift. Our sons do have a real knack for gifting giving. I feel like that gene must have skipped a generation because somehow the whole gift thing feels missing in my dna when gift-giving times roll around.
