Overthinking continues...

I finally got around to steam blocking my Sage Advice square.  And, as I seem to do every time I make a new square, I've separated out the squares I've made into two categories, and have another think over this project.

Those made with a blue-based solid color construction:

And those made with a purple-base, and with an off-white component:

My original thought (what was it, in 2017?) was I would combine all of these squares into the same blanket.  But the more I look at all these squares together, and try to place them together, I'm wondering if I'll be happier if I just make two separate blankets.

Of course, the problem with that is that I will have to make twice as many squares as I would need to make for just one blanket, and it would take at least twice as long to finish all of this "square" business.

On the other hand, if I make two blankets, I will use up more yarn in my stash - which, let's not forget, is one of my goals.

While I work out what I want to do, I'll be alternating making squares with blue and purple as the base color.  At some point, I'll either become more sure of making two blankets, or I'll reach the point of having enough squares for one blanket and decide I'm just ready to be done with the the whole project and combine them all together.

Have I mentioned before how I always seem to overthink a project?

And, for some reason, make things harder than they need to be?

It's like it's in my DNA or something...

  1. Hmmmm - I would seriously consider carrying on as it is and then using both colours for a nice border around the whole thing. That way it would look intentional.
(btw - you'd be proud of me - this afternoon I set aside at least six quilts that are going to the thrift store...offered two to family and the rest I know they would have no interest in. Yay for me!! Oh...and there's a big box almost full of odds and sods that are outta here the next time we go out. Double yay for me!)

    1. Oooh... I'll keep that in mind, Mary Anne! I had not thought about bringing the two colors together in the border. The other thing is that I wonder if the squares that have off-white in them will work well playing amongst the solid color squares. I know I can make them play together, and even figure a way to be intentional about it, but I'm not sure if I prefer it that way. The only way to find out is to keep making squares! :D

    2. And good for you on the downsizing of your quilt collection. The donated quilts will, no doubt, find happy homes. I keep pressing on with my efforts...

  2. I think you enjoy the thinking. In which case, just go ahead!

    1. LOL! I'm not sure why, but this made me laugh 'till I had a coughing spell, Liz. Sometimes I think so much I make my head hurt. I just can't seem to turn it off. But thank you for permission to be me.

  3. That is a lot of thinking there. I agree with Mary Anne. Continue as you origi ally planned. The k es with the iff white in them will help to brighten up the blanket and really help showcase the solid multicolored ones.

    1. Marsha, I do think the off white brightens up the purple squares. I wish I had added it to all the squares.

  4. Well I came here to tell you almost the same as what Mary Anne and Marsha have both said about using one of the styles as a border, but I was thinking the dark on the outside then light rectangle and then squares in the middle dark again. So they become a pop of brightness….like when you have a picture with a coloured mount and a white edge to the mounting board if you’ve seen that you’ll know what I mean.

    1. Liz? That is another idea to consider! The more I've thought about it, I think I'm going to move forward adding off-white to all (or most) of the remaining squares and joining these squares with the gold color. One of the things that has had me tied in a knot is thinking I needed to join in either the blue or the purple. I'm getting freer too with the idea of adding more background colors. I might just liven this whole project up!

Then again, I might be back here in 6 months angsting over it all again. I love all the ideas, though. They have helped me envision what I wasn't before.

  6. Such fun squares! Makes me want to crochet right now, even just a hot pad. Are these made of wood, cotton or another natural fiber that you couls make them hot pads?

    1. These are made of acrylic, Martha. I'm not sure that these squares would make great hotpads (even made with wool or cotton) as a heavy, hot dish on top of them would tend to mash the 3-dimensional designs.

  7. Ooo... I LOVE your squares, the colour combinations ooze with gorgeousness. Oh yes, I tend to overthink some projects, weighing this way and that way and then going back to the beginning and starting all over again... perhaps it's the creative muse in action. And there's nothing for it but to go with the flow.

I look forward to seeing these pieces put together in your larger project. It's going to be a stunner!

    1. Brenda, I sure prefer "creative muse" to "overthinker"! ;^) I hope it doesn't take me years more to finish this project. The stopping and thinking really slows me down.

  8. Becki, you got your hair cut! I almost didn't recognize you. It's so cute and I bet easy to take care of. I love your squares and like you I tend to 'overthink" things also. I heard a saying which I try to remind myself....."progress over perfect" especially since I am getting older and slower and can't seem to do anything as well as I used to! LOL! Except for sitting...I've gotten really good at that! So good to visit with you again. I'll try and be a better blog friend. Hugs ~ Sam

    1. Sam, I'm glad you like the new hairdo. It's growing out from chemo last year, and I'm finding with the heat I really like short hair. I am so glad you stopped in. I have missed keeping up with you. I'm trying to get around to my favorite blogs more now that I'm online a bit more regularly.
