May Day Mandala

On this beautiful first day of May, I offer this week's installment of my Mandala Madness:

I kind of like how Part 6 turned out.  Continuing with the blues and green makes this soften right up. But of course, thinking it's time to add back in the bright pink (it's actually called Shocking Pink) and purple, I'm already starting to worry it's going to go all gaudy again.  Seriously wishing I'd never used those colors to begin with.  Oh well, I bravely crochet on...

The only other crocheting that got any attention this week was my Diamond Stitch Baby Blanket:

It's about half way finished now, but progress seems slow.  For such an easy pattern, it has been ripped back an awful lot.  The concept of the pattern isn't hard at all, but it's very easy to lose track and make mistakes, I'm finding.

And that's all there is to mention on the crochet front.  To see what other Yoppers are up to, visit this week's thread on Ravelry.

  1. Holy cow! How big is that thing going to get? I do love the blues and greens and I too followed the colors on my Frida basket and it is quite bright but then it is based on the artist Frida Kahlo so you have to go with the flow. I always try to follow things exactly the first time and then if I make it a second time I change it up. It is looking gorgeous though but very complicated!
I love that purple baby blanket....I find sometimes the easy patterns I lose track of more because my mind wanders because they're not complex enough to keep my attention or I'm watching T.V. lol!

    1. lol - I'm going for around 50 inches in diameter, or any point thereafter where I'm not cringing at the colors. I'm making it with the thought that it might be a fun little girl's blanket. I started off more or less winging the colors, and trying to use what I have in my stash. While I think there are color packs available, I almost hate to say...I'm not that crazy about the color choices there. I get the feeling the colors the designer (or someone) chose are more about keeping the rounds clear and separate than they are about aesthetics. I love the monochromatic ones (they show of the texture really well), or some that are loud, but clearly coordinated. Mine is just loud. And every once in a while it gets obnoxious. I figure I have maybe 3 or 4 more rounds to go and then I get to quit punishing myself. For now, it's kind of nice having something I know I can post here each week since life seems to be hopping lately and I'm not seeming in much of a crochet mood. It's probably the beautiful spring weather we're having...

  2. Oh Becki I love how the Mandala is working out, I know you might not be crazy about the colours but I do think once it's done and you stand back awhile from it you'll love it. At the moment it looks like a lily on a pond leaf! love that and I can't wait to see what new dimension adding the next layers of colours brings to it. As for the diamond stitch blanket why is it the simplest of patterns can sometimes be the hardest to make it thought without several rippings back, it's currently going on with my sand coloured sample!

    1. A lily on a pond is exactly what I was thinking, too, Ruth. Thanks for the kind word. And it's very good to know I'm not alone in making a fairly simple pattern take forever to complete. Just last night I had to rip back 4 rows - that's the biggest problem with this pattern - often a mistake doesn't become obvious until several rows beyond it. This is a pattern that really does require counting every stitch (and recounting at the end of the row - and doing it carefully). It's sad that it's taken me working at it for this long to finally get that.

  3. The mandala is fabulous, and I think a little girl will love it - I'm not adverse to the colours myself!!

  4. It's so fun to see how the mandala is changing. I think the blues and greens compliment the other colors so well. I like the bright colors. It's going to be great!
