Quite a week...

The last seven days has been quite the week!

Monday, hubs had the day free so we went looking at furniture.  Our family room has never had furniture that was picked out for it, and the time seemed right to consider it.  We found some things we liked, but we decided to hold off and wait for maybe a better sale closer to Labor Day.

And then Monday and Tuesday happened...

My clothes dryer broke on Monday night, and after work on Tuesday I went out and bought a new one.  The broken one was too old and beyond its warranty - and I'd been feeling like the thermostat on it wasn't accurate, anyway... so while I hadn't exactly been contemplating replacing it (and it was painful to spend half the money on a dryer that I was contemplating spending on a sofa), in the end it felt much better to replace it than spend money diagnosing it and hopefully fixing it.

Then Tuesday night my 20 year-old vacuum broke and after finding a deal on Wednesday where I could get a $300 discount off a new one by trading in my nearly vintage and now broken one...   well, let's just say I didn't need any convincing.  So Wednesday I went out and dropped the rest of my sofa money on a bright, shiny new vacuum - that might just live longer than me, I'm suddenly realizing.  It will surely live longer than a new sofa.

Anyway, Friday I became convinced that vacuuming stairs, hard wood floors, and high up places would be much easier with an extension hose, so I went back to get the accessory kit that includes a 12 ft hose and a brush floor attachment.  Oh my - that made a huge difference.  Why did I never consider getting these things before for my old vacuum???  Anyway, the second half of the week, I've been a cleaning machine.  A woman on a mission to find every lazy cobweb and stray dust bunny.   It's amazing how motivating new (and well-working) tools can be.

Saturday, I put down the vacuum cleaner hose and we traveled north to meet our new great-niece.  She is 5 weeks old, so it was high time to meet her. Allow me to introduce you to my (presently) youngest great niece, Hannah:

There were four adults there (not counting the new parents), and if you can just imagine... we all just sat (and sometimes hovered over whoever was holding her) mostly staring at baby Hannah - for over three hours.  It was as if we suddenly came under a spell.  We were entranced.  Definitely enchanted.  I'd forgotten how mesmerizing a new baby can be.  She just lay there doing nothing but breathe, sleep, and occasionally smile. Truly fascinating stuff.

It was a perfect ending to the week.  Nevermind that I want to hold a baby again, already...

As you can imagine, I didn't give my yarn stash much any love this week.  But I did finish the third doily I was working on - Summer Splendor:
The yarn used is Artiste Cotton Thread (available at Hobby Lobby) in the colorway, Ginger

And that's all there is to tell.  It was an expensive week, but not as traumatic as some we've had, and far more wonderful (at its close) than most.

All three doilies in Artiste Cotton Thread in the colors, Ginger, Boysenberry, and Glacier Ice

  2. oh dear! I am glad that you at least had the money to do the replacements needed but I can see that it would be disappointing to not get that new couch! A big HUG! and wonderful about holding the baby!!! :)

    1. Yes! We feel grateful and protected that funds are available for these things. And actually grateful to live in a time and part of the world where these things actually feel like needs when in other parts of the world they would seem like ridiculous luxuries. When things break or need repair (or simply get old and ugly), this reality reminds me to be thankful.

  3. Some would say that not opting to buy the new furniture was the universe aligning so you would be prepared for what was to come. Sometimes you just have to replace things (you'd think they'd last longer wouldn't you!!). I had to replace my iron because my old one decided it ought to pucker up and hold onto the steam until bursting forth in a huge cloud - could have been a good scalding just waiting to happen. So....bought a cheapie replacement thinking it would be 'good enough' for my needs. Hmmm...nope. So....taking that one back and have purchased a new (much more substantial) one. Our tools are more important that what we give them credit for sometimes. Enjoy your new vacuum and dryer!!

    1. Even with another repair staring us in the face, I believe there's a purpose for every thing under heaven. So whether new furniture is in our near future, or not, I'm a big believer that there's a higher plan than mine at work. And our Heavenly Father is in charge of it. And am thankful for that faith. Faith keeps me grounded when the material cannot.

  5. There are a couple of things around here that I’d like to replace but we’ve agreed to wait until they stop working. Looks like the kitchen faucet might be fixed or replaced this week. It was getting pretty tiresome having to draw cold water from the bathtub faucet!

And it really is quite amazing how improved the new devices are, along with all the accessories!

    1. Oh... I'm reading backwards (from the bottom comment to the top), and I commented below about our kitchen faucet needing replacing (as well as pipes and a kitchen sink - and probably the floor of the cabinet below the sink - which makes us wonder where to stop). I'm not happy with any of the choices we have regarding where to stop, but a decision needs to be made soon. A call is in to the plumber, so hopefully by the time he calls me back I will be be settled about how much we actually want (or are willing) to do in our kitchen.

  6. Nothing quite beats new baby snuggles or indeed watching a new baby sleep, it has to be the singularly best way to pass the time! I love how your Summer Splendour turned out, it's gorgeous. You've had quite the eventful week so I hope this coming week is a lot more calm and lot less expensive.

  7. Goodness, that truly was quite a week. The baby snuggles made up for all the other mishaps though. Your ginger doily is so pretty. Each one of them is unique. I am sure the recipient is going to love them.

  8. I'm glad that you were able to put a positive spin on the on your week and that you were able to finish it off with baby snuggles. Hopefully this week will be full of progress and not spending..

    1. So far, this week is starting off much smoother. :) Though we do have a decision to make about our kitchen. Faucet had developed a leak and pipes and sink need replacing as well. Which makes us ponder about whether we should go ahead and jump into a remodel of our seriously outdated (1964) kitchen, or do the smaller (still expensive) fix and continue to make do and hope for the ability to move soon and let new owners create the kitchen they truly want. It really doesn't ever end...

  9. Awww, beautiful picture of you and baby Hannah. Sorry for the unwanted expenses but at least you're enjoying your new tools. Your ginger doily is lovely -- I can picture it grounding a beautiful autumn display.

    1. Thanks, Maria. I do love the gold thread I made that doily in, but I decided to make a second one for me in a muted orange color. I just wanted to do it in another color and I think "Papaya" will also be a great color for autumn.

  11. Hi Becki :)) Oh gosh, when it rains it pours doesn't it?? We made a huge vacuum investment when we got the 3 dogs...one of those Dyson machines and it works so well, I LOVE it...but we've had to get replacement parts each year now...they really don't make them like they used to. I love the idea of the 12 foot extension hose though. Your doilies are so pretty! :)
