Smoothy time...

Seeing the cherry tree blossoming recently has put me in mind of harvesting fruit from it and the peach tree this summer, as did uncovering the strawberry plants and seeing a few blossoms there this week.  There is still some time before I'm ready to plant into the garden, but thinking of all of this reminds me that we need to finish up what fruit is left in the freezer from last spring and summer - so as to make room for new  fruit.

The temps have also been unseasonably warm for much of April, though thankfully it cooled down again last night and we may return for a couple of weeks to temps in the 50's and 60's before heating up again.  That makes me very happy.

All of the blossoms and warm weather inspired me to pull out some frozen fruit and make a simple smoothy for a treat recently.  And I was reminded how wonderful a cold fruit smoothy is.  I don't make them often, but my typical smoothy contains frozen fruit, fresh spinach and just enough orange juice to make the concoction drinkable through a straw.  The smoothy below had spinach from the grocery, orange juice, frozen blueberries, and strawberries and peaches from our own yard.

The colors were so beautiful I had to snap some pictures!

Do you enjoy smoothies, and if so, what do you like to put in yours?

  1. I love frozen fruit-based ice creams and sorbets. Smoothie bowls are fun too. Not sure I have a fave, though I love cherry season. Oh my yum.

  3. Looks good!
I make strawberry and a blueberry smoothie, nothing fancy. This summer, though, I am considering them as a way to consume more greens.

    1. Strawberries and blueberries are a staple in my smoothies. Peaches from our own tree took it up a notch. :)

  4. I never would have thought to put spinach together with fruit in a smoothie. Not that I've ever made one, but still. Might have to try it though.

    1. Mary Anne, the spinach really is tasteless in a smoothy. Added nutrition without affecting the taste. The only downside is sometimes the smoothy turns brownish if I use a lot of spinach. Also, it takes a really good blender to shred the spinach leaves. If using a normal blender, the resulting texture might not be as appealing. My old Ninja blender isn't as good as a Vitamix for getting the ingredients totally smooth, but I'm satisfied with the results.

  5. I love love love smoothies. In the summer, I make one most every morning. There is a store down the road that always made my favorite, so I try to replicate it often. It has strawberries, mango, and orange juice with spinach. I pretty much do the same as you..fruit with orange juice. If my fruit is fresh I use some ice cubes. The one thing I don't like in a smoothie is banana. That is odd because I dearly love bananas, but in a smoothie that is all you taste. It overpowers all other fruit.

    1. I used to go through phases of making smoothies often, Sandy. Not sure why, but I haven't made any for, it seems like, several years now. Having frozen fruit to eat up, I think I may be back in a smoothie phase for a while. :)

    1. Indeed. I'm wanting to make one again, but it's too cold to fully enjoy it. Makes me shiver to think about it... ;^)

  8. ohhh... that looks good :-)) I haven't made one for a long time. I like making these with fresh fruit... so wait for the strawberries and then with basil maybe :-) Greetings to you from Viola.
It was warm here at the weekend, but today it's cold and rainy... so the frozen fruits are not the favorite with me today.

  10. Your smoothie looks so delicious! I tend to stick to berries and I put a little yogurt in mine, which probably makes it more of a shake than a smoothie!

    1. Rain, adding yogurt makes it more nutritious - with the added protein. I originally used plain yogurt when I learned to make these years ago, but I didn't particularly like the taste. You suggesting it being like a shake might make me change my mind on that. The power of suggestion! I might just have to try it again sometime with that mindset. :)
