A dilly of a doily...

I've been wanting to make a Grace Fearon doily for some time now, so this was the week!  
This 10-inch Mable Doily wasn't exactly difficult, but I had to do it in stages, as it took some concentration.  I love the dimension this designer puts in her doilies.  

Because Mary-Anne asked me recently what I do with doilies I make, I decided I need to be more intentional now and then - photographing them in a way I might actually use them. 

When I decorate with a doily, it simply becomes a part of a vignette, or a collection of objects that I put together.  Like this:  
  
Except for the fact that I turned this arrangement toward the window for better lighting, this is exactly how I think I'll display this doily for the spring time.

And since this is the last day of March, I gathered the various dishcloths I've made this month and I counted 15!

It's been a full-of-good-things week here that ended with a birthday dinner last evening for our two oldest sons at Sushi Club.  I'm not really a fan of sushi, but this place creates works of art with their all-you-can-eat platters of sushi rolls.  We certainly ate all we could!  And more.  They charge you per roll if you leave any behind!  lol  

Of course I didn't think to take a picture until we were stuffed and there was no more prettiness to behold.  

This is a sad remnant of one of the gorgeous platters they brought out as we feasted.   Since it's not much to look at at this point, I guess it doesn't really matter that I can't ever manage to get an in-focus indoor picture on my cell phone.

It was a fun night with some adventurous (for me) eats.

And when the evening was over, we drove home in snow!  



Thankfully, the sun is shining today, though, so I guess the old saying came true here this year.  March came in like a lion and went out like a lamb.

Bring on spring!!!!

  1. Hi Becki :) Your doily is so pretty, I like the arrangement you made with it! I'm not a big fan of sushi at all. I've tried and I just don't like it! But it's true, they can be works of art! Snow...oh the snow...our March came in like a lion and is going out like a lion...could that be a first in weather lore lol?

  2. The doily is breath taking beautiful! What a lovely way to display it. Fifteen cloths this month! You really outdid yourself. I agree...not a sushi eater here either unles they are all veggies. I can not believe you had snow yesterday. We are getting in the high 80's here already. Pool is already starting to get into the 70's so will be swimming in a month or two.

    1. Thank you, Marsha. I'm glad we still have spring to look forward to. Hopefully! Last year, we went from snow to hot weather and I felt a bit cheated. My favorite temps anymore are in the 50's and 60's.

  3. Love the doily (I have that designer on my list too) and the color is ideal for Spring. And 15 dish cloths, wow! Funny, we went out for sushi on Friday for the first time in ... hmmm ... a long, long time!

    1. Thank you, Maria! I want to make more of this designer's doilies, but they still intimidate me a bit - just looking at them. This was a great introduction. The pattern is free and it's probably one of the simpler of her "dimensional" doilies.

  5. Your doily is great, silly me thought these were under house plant pots! It makes much more sense to display them how you are! Can they be starched and hung? They are so pretty. A few years ago I was commuting to London every week, and my treat of the week was going to Yo!Sushi at Gatwick airport on a Thursday evening and scoffing as many dishes as my dinner allowance would cover. I don’t eat meat or raw fish, but they had the most yummy things. My top 3 dishes: Steamed buns with cooked salmon in yummy sauce, Yasai rolls with inari, avocado, cucumber, cos lettuce and carrot roll, topped with teriyaki & mayo, chocolate mochi balls...my tummy is rumbling like Winnie the Pooh’s now. Oh I need to add a 4th a smoked salmon and cream cheese California roll. We don’t have any sushi places nearby, nearest would be Aberdeen 115 miles away! I’m super jealous. Need to google how to make the steamed buns and salmon dish!

    1. I actually do spray starch mine a bit when I pin my doilies out for blocking. Mine don't turn out super stiff, but a bit more starch and they would. These can also be stitched (or crocheted) to hoops or framed as Ruth mentions below. I've seen them decorate pillows - actually, I've seen them applied to various things as a motif. Reading your list of sushi items I know we ate most of the things you described, but when they were all arranged on a large platter I had no idea what was what as we ate. Except that I special ordered a single Dragon Ball (after seeing one delivered to another table). It was my favorite. The menu says it's made with avocado, tuna and crab. All I know it it was yummy and pretty.

  6. The doily is just gorgeous Becki, I think it's my favourite one that you've made to date and I really like how you display them in your home. That is lovely to see. In recent years I've seen them backed onto card and displayed in frames to make pretty pictures, I think that may be what I'd do. 15 cloths is great, wow well done.
    March on this side of the world has also come in like a lion and went out like a lamb.

    1. I think this is a wonderful way to display doilies, too, but somehow I never have done it. I'd have to be a lot more intentional in making them in the right colors and then actually getting them framed. Stripping wall paper and painting is about all the "intention" I seem to be able to muster when it comes to my walls. Maybe some day... Inspire me, friend!

  7. Another gorgeous doily! They will be on my 19-20 YOP list for sure as I love all yours. Your dishcloths are numerous and lovely! Very "springy' looking! I stayed at the Hotel Nikko years ago in Chicago and had some of their sushi but as top rated of a restaurant as it is I did not like sushi....no thanks. Raw anything is not for me. GLad you enjoyed it and had a good time!

  8. I'm not a fan of sushi either - just the thought of eating raw fish is enough to turn me off! Thank you for showing the vignette with the doily - looks so pretty (and this doily is particularly gorgeous!).

    1. When I think of it as raw fish I'm kind of turned off, too. But when I remember that beautiful Dragon Ball and how tasty it was, I'm suddenly all in! lol
