Organizing...

Today's post is an update on all the organizing I've been doing over the last week.   I made it a goal to get all of my stashed yarn into a large closet.

I'm used to making do with a hodge podge of cardboard boxes, but after studying the situation I decided that things would not only look nicer if my containers had some uniformity to them, but things might also be more efficient.

So...   I set out to make all of my somewhat organized (if unimpressively  stashed) stash a little more neatly contained.  This is only a small portion that had taken up residence in the corner of my "yarn room":

I considered the various sizes of plastic containers I had easily available to me, and I finally settled on these nifty boxes I was able to buy at Walmart (I figured it would be easy to get more, or easy to return if I bought too many):

The second day I had to go back and buy more.

I also made use of some containers (mostly cardboard shoe box-size boxes) I already had.  And after several shifts of reorganizing, by mid-week I finally felt like I had something to show for my efforts.  It's still not the prettiest of storage systems, but it's so much more efficient.

My apologies for so many dim and uncrisp pictures.  It just wasn't happening today...

Now, I have to admit...  I did not get everything in the closet.  I still have to use these zippered bags to hold quite a bit of worsted weight yarn yet:

It should also be noted that I can't get one box of crocheted threads in the closet.    And clearly, I'm still using a few cardboard boxes for some things. But still...  I'm pretty happy with what I managed to get into the closet - which isn't just yarn, but also my cross stitch/embroidery supplies as well as some other crafty bits on the shelves.

Once the room is painted and I move a bookshelf into the room, I'll be able to make some different decisions about some of what's stored on the shelves of the closet and who knows?  Maybe I'll get my thread in there afterall.   😉

When that big job was finished, I then set myself to accomplish another organizing chore I'd been dragging my feet over - my printed out crochet and knit patterns.  I still have way too many, but after sorting through and pitching duplicates and patterns I no longer wanted, I organized what was left into these fun binders:

I'm happy to report that after spending so much on the plastic containers, these cost nothing to put together thanks to a plethora of 3-ring binders we've recently emptied (which were mostly recycled from somewhere else to begin with), and my over abundant paper stash I also have.  I may have to work on paper crafting supplies next...

The icing on the cake about all this organizing is that it's helped me see some projects I want to start working on, and see yarn/color combinations I hadn't noticed before.  There's something about putting your hands on every single thing that makes it more real - yes, Marie Kondo, I was paying some attention when I read about your "magic".   While my yarn has always been organized, this reorganization got my brain geared up and excited to make new projects - which means using more yarn!

Speaking of using yarn...  In between all the organizing, I also managed to start a simple knitted ribbed scarf this week:

What I did here was measure how much I was able to knit in one hour.  Now this is worsted weight yarn and I think my needle is a size 8. In one hour I managed to knit three inches (on a scarf that is about 6 1/2 - 7 inches across.  I honestly have no idea if that is good speed or not, but when I calculated how long it will have taken me to knit this scarf to a length of between 60 - 75 inches, I discovered that this simple scarf will have around 24 hours of knitting invested in it.  😦

I seriously would have rather not known that.

But now that I do I will still plug on with it...   Thankful that I can crochet.  Because if I had to depend on knitting alone to use up my stash of yarn, it would take me several lifetimes.

As is, I shouldn't need to buy any more yarn in this lifetime.

One more thing...  Starting on November 1st, I plan to unofficially participate in NaBloPoMo again.  I'll post later this week what my personal challenge will be, but I'll say now that I have something fun (for me) up my sleeve.  I'm curious to know if anyone else is considering doing this.  Let me know below if you are!

  1. Oh I love a bit of organising. Especially watching other people. I have problems putting it into practice myself! Love the beginnings of the scarf, don't think about time just enjoyment whilst doing it.

    1. :) I sort of enjoy organizing. It's the follow-through that trips me up. Yeah... one really can't think about the time it takes to actually knit or crochet things. I shouldn't have gone and done that to myself.

  2. Wow! You have certainly been a busy little bee 🐝 and it all looks beautiful!

Your scarf is going to be quite lovely with those colors.

    Take care ♡

  3. I think someone likes yarn as much as I do fabric! I love organizing and the feeling it gives when you get it all done.
When I retired I realized I had too much fabric. I had borderline hoarded it. I would go in the store and plan a project and with work it never got off the ground. I ended up donating a bunch of it last year. I still have too much, but feel a little less stressed when I open my cabinets and more inspired. Fabric just calls my name....not good.
The scarf is going to be beautiful! I love that color.

    1. Most of my yarn has been bought with projects in mind, but there just isn't enough time to make all the projects that seem like a good idea at one time. I'm planning on moving my sewing machine into my "yarn room" where it will be more accessible. Let's hope that doesn't result in my hoarding fabric, too. I've already done that and donated most of it.

  4. Congratulations. Your have officially joined the "my yarn will outlive me" club. You have done a great job of organizing your yarn and other crafts. I did chuckle when you figured out how much slower knitting is over crocheting. This is one of the reasons I crochet shawls and blankets.

I am considering doing g NaBloPoMo. I have a trip planned for 4 days but should be able to post from my hotel room without issues. It would be my 3rd year to do it. Plus, I enjoy blogging. Hmmmm......I think I just talked myself into doing it.

  6. Wow, this is really nice! I especially love the binders. I'm totally going to steal this idea, my patterns are always in a mess, and I never seem to find the ones I'm looking for. To be honest, I never thought I'd ever say that but life is so much better with every thing in its own place, and everything organized and labeled. Don't tell my husband I said so, though. ;-)

  7. "The second day I had to go back and buy more" this made me laugh. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with such a huge stash...

  8. OMG. You should open a yarn store. I am jealous of your stash and you make Marie Kondo proud!. I have to sort through my printed patterns too. THey are in some semblance of order but three big overstuffed binders need to be whittle down into 5 or 6 smaller ones like yours. Thank you for the inspiration to get to it....right after I nap...and swim...and probably eat another turkey sandwich.

    1. Ooops... I actually have 11 binders of patterns. I must have left a few out of the pictures. But they're not stuffed, so for now I'm not going to make any of them go on a diet. ;^)

  9. You're like a good shot in the arm! I love to hear and see other's attempts at organizing craft items. I just mailed off the grands Halloween so now on to the crafts room reorg! How did you make those lovely labels for your notebooks? The scarf look so pretty...I don't worry about how long something takes.....I like making so however long it takes is fine with me and for gifts sometimes they get it the next year! LOL! thank you so much! I can't tell you how much this motivated me! Could you do this every day? LOL!

    1. The labels were simply made in a word document using a pretty font (and playing with the size so they fit the binder). I have some shape templates from scrapbooking days so I used them to cut the different shapes for the front and spine labels (after I printed out the words).

  12. What a transformation, I love your new boxes and clear labels, it must feel great. Our local yarn shop isn’t as organised as you are (nor does it have as much yarn 😉. The other thing about sorting stash is it’s easier to think of Projects when you’ve reminded yourself of all your options. I won’t see how fast I knit after what you’ve said, it may be a bit depressing realising my jumper may not get finished by winter.

    1. Yes! It's being reminded of all my different yarns that spurs me to want to start some new things.

  13. And I thought I had a lot of yarn! Wowza your stash. I love how you organized the patterns. I need to do that.

  14. Must be something in the air with all this organizing going on both there, and here! You have an enviable yarn stash, particularly when compared to mine which fits in one small tote. I'm working really hard on reducing even that amount with the ultimate goal of being 'forced' to buy what I need project to project. Now....if I could only do the same with buttons and beads!!!

    1. You don't know how wonderful the idea of having just one tote of yarn sounds to me, Mary Anne. Who knows... maybe all this getting rid of we're doing will inspire me to pare down the yarn more, too.
