Bird Pillow...

I have a finish this week!   I don't know how many may remember this Blue Tit Cushionbut I started it on May 2nd, 2019.  Yesterday (May 16th, 2020), I finally finished it:

There is just simply no reason for this having languished  unloved in a basket for over a year!  Shortly after beginning it, I kind of cooled on all the color changes, but when I set my mind to it again this week, I had the front finished in just a couple of sittings. And the back in two more sittings.  I kid you not - this little 12-inch pillow does have hours in it, but it wasn't complicated.   The picky me wants to cringe over the the squiggly white on the wings, but I did it twice and it didn't improve the second time, so I decided to be done with it and call the squiggliness "artistic".   It helps that when I looked at the designer's pillow, her wings have squiggles too.  I am reminded that squiggles are, to some degree, inherent in crochet colorwork.

And here's a picture of the back - because the back is just as sweet as the front:

Aren't those heart buttons cute?   I'm so glad I had purchased those many, many months ago.  If I hadn't, it could be weeks or months more before this was finished.  Note to self:  When starting a project, have all the pieces parts.  You never know when something like a pandemic will hit.

And lastly, on a non-YOP note, but since this could benefit interested YOPers, I'd like to link to a post I wrote recently about how to make links in a post that open in new windows.  The short of it is that links that open into new windows (as opposed to opening in the same window as the blog the links appear on) have benefits for folks who read blog posts on a devices like laptops, chromebooks, or personal computers.  The benefit to the blogger is that links that open into new windows are less likely to cause your blog from being lost to the reader while they're checking out your cool links.   If you're curious how to do this simple thing, check out my post. The simple instructions are early in the post; the rest of the post is just an explanation of why it's a helpful thing.

And that's all she wrote!

  1. I checked my links and I noticed mine is set to 'open in new window'. It must have been the default from when I set up my blog. Your pillow is so sweet. I remember well when you started this project. As for the white squiggles...I think it makes it look more like a feather would. Feathers are not flat and straight but have lots of variation in them. The heart buttons are so sweet. I feel buttons can make or break a project. You chose well for this one.

    1. Re Links: You may be right, because it seemed like once upon a time my links always opened up in new windows, and then suddenly they didn't. Don't know if I accidentally turned it off, or what. I do know that many blogs I visit (and some YOPers), don't have their links set to open in new windows, and my guess is it's unintentional for the most part when that is the case.

    1. I do have two other bird pillow patterns from this designer. It does feel a bit soon to make another just now, but your suggesting it makes me more inclined to consider it. ;^)

    1. Thank you, Mary Anne. I had to go back a ways on your blog to find a link, but you don't have things set for links to open in a new window. Just sayin' in case you'd like to change it. :)

  5. I love it and the heart buttons are perfect for it. Yes, it has for once helped to have lots of stash to stitch from and lots of floss to choose from since I hear it is getting harder to find. I think the squiggly lines add character and are just right for it.

    1. Thank you, Sandy. I have been thankful to have plenty of crafty supplies during this lock-down so far. Depending on what it is, I've even found it hard to buy some things online. I hope it's not a whole year (or more) of having that experience. :/

  6. Very cute birdie! Just think of the squiggles as the wind ruffling her feathers.

  7. I love your bird pillow!!! I still haven't sewed the buttons on my Happy Hooky pillow that she also designed. I'm so bad! I think I have the buttons too! Shame on me. Thank you for the heads up on the "open in a new window" check box. I will be paying attention to that from now on! Have a good week! What's next on your YOP list?

    1. Thank you, Sam! I've started a new project this week (it's a shawl/scarf). Looking forward to showing what I've gotten done next Sunday! :)

  8. Wow, what a lot of work! I think the white squiggles on the wing are quite realistic. And the way the back is finished with the heart buttons -- just beautiful. I don't think I would ever attempt a crochet project with so many color changes. But then, I must admit I have a crochet UFO that has no color changes at all and I am just dragging my feet on finishing it. Hoping to accomplish that this month!

  11. What a lovely pillow . . . and yes, the back is as cute as the front! Charming! I am glad you saved this project from languishing in the basket. I, too, have picked up a languishing project. It is not yet finished, but I am making progress!

    1. Thank, Cheryl! It's nice when a long langushing project proves to be so satisfying to finish. :)
