Some de-stashing projects...

With the bitter cold, and no real outside commitments this week I stayed home and had plenty of time to crochet.  It felt like quite an indulgence.  That said, I'm very happy to see temps rising again into the double digits - maybe up to the high 40's by next weekend!

The first thing I accomplished (crochet-wise) was finishing the Openwork Scarf.

Sometime back I had purchased (online) a bunch of skeins of Premier Everyday yarn in the color Violet Heather, but when I received it I was disappointed to not be able to detect any heathering in it.  To make a good thing out of a disappointment, I rolled several skeins with Woolike fingering yarn in the color mauve and it created this sort of marled effect when crocheted up:

I like it in this scarf!  I have one more skein wound up with the same mauve yarn that I need to find a use for, but I'd like to try mixing it with some other colors, too.   Kind of a fun thing to do, and a way to use more stash - which I'm on a mission to do.

And then I made a color block scarf - made of half double crochet stitches into the back loop of every stitch.  This stitch pattern gives a ridged, "washboard" effect.   Washed and dried, this scarf (made mainly with Vanna's Choice yarn) came out soft and squishy:

Wrapped twice, it makes a snug cowl around the neck.  💜

And lastly, I continued working on a pillow for the Cushion/Pillow CAL in the Our Happy CAL Place on Ravelry.  I'm using the first two weeks of the Elements pattern to, hopefully, make a pillow that will be the right size for a couch.  This design is surprisingly easy to do:

I also did some crocheting on more squares for my Last Dance blanket, but I'm holding off taking pictures until they are finished.  Honestly, I'm not sure how much crocheting I'll manage this week as I have an owie in my right wrist.  I think I've developed a ganglion cyst, and it's painful, so I'm going to try wearing a brace to minimize my wrist movement and maybe it will go away on its own.  Wouldn't that be dandy?  Anyway, I don't think I can crochet while wearing a wrist brace, so I may just have my squares to show next week.

I hope you have a good week.  To see what other YOPpers are up to, visit our group on Ravelry.

  1. You take crocheting to a whole new level. I am still stuck on granny squares. I love the colour block cowl. I too like to pair up different yarns for different effects. Your openwork scarf is great the way the colours weave together.

    1. Thanks, Mary-Anne. My crocheting here is pretty simple. I think the photos might make them appear more than they truly are. ;^) I love granny squares. Hoping to soon get back to my Maybelle Flower squares blanket and my BAMCAL (which is basically made up of fancy granny squares).

  3. Your crochet is so beautiful...mine never looks that good. I would have never thought of winding 2 yarns together....genius!!! I too like the effect or is affect? I can never remember. The color block cowl is gorgeous and those are the prettiest colors of yarn. Your square turned out great. You got a lot done this week considering your wrist problem. Aren't those cysts the kind where you lay on the floor and some drops a heavy weight (like a pile of books) on your wrist to pop the cyst? I hope you feel better so you can continue 'de-stashing'....all your projects are beautiful!

    1. I think I may have created my wrist problem with all the crocheting I've done (or at least exacerbated something that was already happening). Yes, this is the type of cyst I think I have. I'm pretty willing to try home treatments, but I don't have the nerve to try to hit it with something. It hurts just to press on it. It's also very close to a blood vessel and well... I just don't think that's a good idea at all. lol I wonder how many people actually did this "hit-it-with-a-book" treatment, and who lived (or didn't live) to regret it. We don't hear those stories... ;^)

  4. Sorry to hear about your wrist. I hope it feels better with rest/immobilization!

That block is stunning! And your colour choices are perfect to! Love it!
And that colourblock cowl is awesome too. I really like the ridged effect from crocheting in the back loop :)

  5. Becki, you amaze me with your idea to wrap 2 yarns together. I never come up with thoughts like that. I would have given the yarn awah lol. That being said, the cowl is perfect with the dual colorway. Your color block scarf looks warm and inviting. Your new pillow square looks complicated to me. But if you say it is easy, I will trust you.

Ganglion cysts can be quite painful. Especially when inflamed. Take some anti-inflammatory meds (advil, motrin) if you can and rest it for a few days. Your Dr can help you make it better without surgery too. Hope it feels better in a few days.

    1. Aww. Thanks, Marsha, but my creative ideas are rarely, if ever, original. And this one is not original with me. I've been looking in my stash and now I'm wondering how this dark violet yarn would look paired with some lavender fingering yarn. Now, if I could just figure out what I did with the other 4 or 5 skeins I should have. They're not where I'd think they'd be. I'm sure I hoping I didn't give them away.

  6. I'm so sorry you have an owie - that's beyond upsetting when it affects your ability to do the things you enjoy. Taking a few days off and resting it might be a good thing. Maybe, though, it took note of your plans to de-stash and is pitching a fit at the thought? Your projects are wonderful - I especially love the square pattern.

    1. Thank you! It is unfortunate that my wrist had to start hurting just as I became resolved to tame my stash. Isn't that just the way it goes sometimes...

  7. I hope your wrist is improving with rest. I love the scarves, marling is all the rage at the moment, Stephen West even has leggings! Now there's a thought with your stash!
