Burn Through Stash Like Crazy - Weeks 3 & 4

Since I didn't produce a YOP post last week, I'm playing catch-up today.

Sometime over the past two weeks I finished two more scarves made with a simple rib stitch that's shown in this video.

In both of the scarves below I used the same Red Heart Boutique yarn in the colorway, Heirloom, but combined it with two different colors to see which I liked better:

Combined with Hobby Lobby ILTY in the color, Graphite

And then combined with a light gray color.

It's really interesting how a light and dark base color changes the appearance of the colors in the multicolored yarn.   I like both scarves, but I like them differently.

Jenn asked me a couple of weeks ago how much of the Boutique yarn these scarves take.  For the darker one above, I cast on 29 stitches and made this thing long (about 3 inches above my knees), and I know I used just over a skein of the Boutique yarn (I estimate that I used ~316 yards).

For the smaller scarf, I cast on 25 stitches and it's not nearly as long (would fit a child or small adult), and I used nearly 90% of a skein (or about 250 yards).

I don't know how helpful that is since yardage could vary depending on a person's gauge, and the size scarf one makes.  But since I was asked, I did want to report what it took for me to make these.

Does this look familiar?:
This is my second Spicier Life Blanket, and it's nearly finished!   It just needs a few ends woven in and then a hard steam blocking before I finish it up with a pretty border.  Next week I should be able to show a finished blanket!

I will be doing a tally of yarns used once this blanket is finished, and will record it under my 2018 goals since most of the crocheting of it was done this year.   I'm not thinking I'm going hit my 100 skeins goal, but this blanket will certainly bring me closer.  Trying to diminish my stash by 100 skeins of yarn in a year's time was a good challenge for me.  It's totally doable (if I'd just stay focused), so I'm going to challenge myself again.  The challenge will be to surpass diminishing my stash by 100 skeins of yarn in 2019.

I think I can...

  2. I like both scarves too: one is like a sunset, the other a sunrise.
Thanks for the yardage information: I can see now that I won't get a full scarf out of what I'm using, but a nice neckwarmer/cowl.
The blanket looks great! Looking forward to its glamour shots and your yarn tally.
    Happy New Year!

    1. When I turned one into a cowl, I found I had to cinch it up a bit. Otherwise that section would stretch out larger than the rest of the scarf. It's not a problem, and not difficult to do, but I thought I'd mention it.

    1. I can't wait to show the blanket next week. It's been languishing far too long.

  5. It is amazing Becki how the different coloured bases affect the outcome of the scarves. I like both as well but for different reasons too. Looking forward to seeing the second blanket all finished.

  6. You Spicier Blanket has some wonderfully happy colors in it. Weaving in all those ends would make me cry. I do have a friend that loves to weave in ends though. I think I would pay her to do that many LOL. The scarves are really pretty. They look very warm and snuggly. I hope you accomplish your 100 skein challenge. Happy New Year!

    1. Thanks, Marsha! I've woven in a lot of ends and I progressed on the blanket, so it's really not very bad at this point. I can't imagine how I'd feel if I hadn't done that.

    2. Actually, yes I can. I'd be too discouraged to do it, that's how I'd feel...

  7. One thing about combining two yarns together is that you use up twice as much! Nice scarves are the result. Looking forward to seeing the finished blanket too!

    1. That was my original motivation (to use twice as much yarn), but the results are so fun! It's been a very interesting experiment.

  11. Hello! Just stumbled across your beautiful site. I have a question about the scarves as I love the look and wish to work one up for my daughter. I'm wondering what size needles you used. Thank you, and sending blessings.

    1. Hi Maureen. With this pattern you can use any size needle that fits the yarn you want to use - the ribs will simply be larger or smaller depending on the size of both. In the scarves above (which are thick and squishy), I double stranded worsted weight yarn, and I used size 13 knitting needles. It's been almost 5 years since I've made these scarves. They are easy and were a favorite of mine when I wrote this post. They would still be a favorite, except that I'm not knitting much at this point. You might just inspire me to pick up my needles again and knit something! :)
