Another post that almost wasn't...

The title of this post is starting to make a regular appearance.  Not sure what that means, but somehow I always seem to muster the motivation to make another post!  A post that almost wasn't.

It was a week that started off not so good.  But fortunately improved...

On Monday I found I had done something to my back (though I don't know what) and by evening all I could manage to do was sit with a heating pad, knit some simple dishcloths or watch Netflix.  I can't do both at the same time anymore, unfortunately.

BTW, I recommend the Ken Burns documentary on The Mayo Clinic,  the movie called The Sapphires...  and something else I can't remember the title of, but it was a documentary about Industrial Musicals.  Hilarious!  And very interesting - to me, anyway.

By Tuesday morning my back was no better and I had to cancel my ESL session.  By Tuesday afternoon I was starting to improve (meaning I could move without yelping), and was bored out of my skull so I finally got out my crochet hook and cotton yarn and started making a Market Bag:

Wednesday I was actually feeling okay enough to meet a friend for a walk.  Walking was probably  good for my back because it was all uphill from there.

Thursday I did grocery shopping.  Whee!

Friday was interesting.  A young friend (actually a daughter of long-time friends) had a booth at the Hoosier Hills Fiber Festival near my home.  I offered to come over for a while to give her a break.  She welcomed the offer and it was fun seeing her adorable crocheted cacti.  I didn't think to take my camera with me, but here is her Etsy shop:  Handmade By A Friend.   Seriously, though...  I wish I'd had a camera.  She is so clever in her presentation of these fun items and, while most are smaller than they may look in the pictures, they look better in person.  Each one unique.  And she had some terrific containers for the cacti she showed in her both.

I spent some time wandering through the vendor hall, and my first time through I bought a little rug-hooking kit.  Little is the operative word.  This little kit is supposed to make a finished project the size of a postcard.  I'm wishing I hadn't bought that, in all honesty, but it looked so fun at the time.  Ugh.  Why is it so easy to impulse buy things  like that?

And the second time through I bought some yarn:

I like the color, and I imagine it will make something pretty and soft one of these days, but it was an impulse buy, too.  Kind of wishing now I hadn't bought it either, but at least it was on sale.  On clearance, in fact.  I wonder why???

Anyway... impulse buys aside, the Fiber Festival was a pleasant way to spend a few hours.  While it seemed improved in some ways from when I attended a couple of years ago,  I do wish there were more vendors.

Saturday I worked with Ruth (companion care).  And shortly before lunch the power went out.  I heard a loud boom and then we were sitting in the dark.  The power was on at my house, so we got in the car and drove there for lunch and an activity I had planned for us to do together.  Later in the day I ran the sound board for Sunday's worship team's practice.  All in all, another pleasant day.  And my back was still more improved.

And then there was today.  A rainy day, but a lovely day in many respects.  Church was very good, the music was great๐Ÿ˜‰, the sermon was convicting, and then we enjoyed lunch out with friends where we shared good food and laughter.

And that was my week.  Three more YOP weeks left this year!   Check out what other YOPers are up to by visiting our group on Ravelry.

  1. Wow......what a horrible start to your week. So glad it improved fairly quickly. The fiber fest sounds like it was fun. The market bag is very nice. They are so wonderful to have. Thanks for the movie recommends.

    1. Feeling as good as I do a week later, it's almost hard to remember how debilitating the pain was last Monday and early Tuesday. So glad to be moving freely again.

  2. Cool market bag! Lovely fresh colour and design. I’m sorry you’ve had back pain, sounds like it eased up as the week went on and hopefully it won’t reoccur. We’ve just got a free month’s trial of Netflix, so it’s good to have some recommendations. So far we’ve watched the Haunting of Hill House that I kept looking at my knitting to avoid being spooked and I’m working my way through The Crown. The Azalea coloured wool is very pretty, I can see why you bought it.

    1. Wishing I knew what I did, as I'd definitely avoid doing that again to my back, but so thankful the serious pain didn't last any longer than it did. And yeah... the color of that yarn is what drew me in. Like a magnet. And on clearance - how I could I resist?!?

  3. I'm so glad your week improved Becki, and that you weren't confined to your chair for any longer than you were. Love the wee market bag you got done so it wasn't completely unproductive. The stand sounds utterly adorable and ughh to the impulse buys, perhaps they might not turn out to be so bad? Let's hope so anyway.

    1. I'm tempted to just get rid of the "rug" hooking kit. I don't even want to try it now. I should have waited for something more my style, than buying something that was just "acceptable" as my first project of this kind. Live and learn!

  4. Ouch! Back aches are truly crippling and very painful. Sounds like something got out of whack and I'm not surprised that the walk helped. Many times moving helps put things back in the right place but of course when it is so painful you don't want to move. I don't have many back issues but the few times I have I take tylenol so I can keep moving because I know 'moving' is the cure all. So glad you are better and that your week improved. I love your purchases....add them to YOP 2019-20! Thank you for the Netflix recommendation. I've been to Mayo several times and my ex-brother-in-law was chief of radiology there. I have a book about the Mayo brothers but haven't read it. I love the market bag....I keep saying I'm going to make one. I need to write it down on "the list" or it will not get done. I hope this coming week goes smoothly for you and no more back issues! TTYL!

    1. The walk definitely helped, but I honestly couldn't have done it before Wednesday. On Tuesday I also had massaged the place where it hurt with a tennis ball held between my back and a wall. I'm sure that was the first important thing I did. It loosened the place that was "stuck" and I'm sure made taking a long walk on Wednesday possible. I was sure I'd need ice and a heating pad after the walk, but I don't think I did. Our bodies are amazing, fragile, powerful things...

  7. I'm so sorry your back was giving you so much trouble. So glad you are feeling better, and that the second half of your week was both productive and fun. Take care of yourself (not that I need to tell you that, I know you do).

  8. Rug hooking the size of a postcard....oh my. I am glad your back is on the mend - thank God for heating pads, eh? I love the colour of the yarn you bought - it will make a lovely shawl I bet.

    1. I know! The postcard size is what reeled me in. Starting small is good, I thought. But once home, the size just looked awkward, and when I pulled out the different components of the kit, I found some of the color choices uninspiring. It's my own fault. And I just didn't need to buy something like that. Sigh.

  9. Your bag looks fabulous and that yarn is just to die for, what will you make with it? I think it needs a special project...

  10. So sorry your back was giving you grief - I know what that's like, so I feel for you. That's a great market bag so at least you managed to be creative through all your pain. I bought the makings yesterday for some produce bags which I hope might make good gifts at Christmas. Some experimentation is coming up!

  11. Hi Becki :) Walking is fantastic as therapy. I'm sorry your hurt your back. I'm going to tell you something I'm not proud of...one summer I actually pulled my back out SEWING, lol...yeah, sewing. I guess it was the way I was hunched over the machine, but I was definitely telling people I had some great adventure on the mountain when it happened lol! ;) Your bag is wonderful! I avoid shopping as much as possible because of impulse buying, I'm terrible with that!!!

  12. I'm glad your back got better. My lower back would stiffen up just from sitting or it'd be hard to get up from the floor. I got back to planking with my arms straight up and it's helped immensely. What fun you had at the festival. Fun details the cactus merchandise have; kudos to her for putting herself out there.
