This photo shows the colors much more correctly than last week's
I immediately starting making another hat. While I'm still fascinated with helical knitting, on my way to gathering more colors I noticed a lone skein of pretty ombre yarn that looked like it might just be perfect for making a hat or two. With no yarn changes, or any thinking required, I whipped up a second hat fairly quickly:
The pattern for all these hats is Benefaction Hat - a free download from Knit Picks.com
and here is a video tutorial for the Benefaction Hat.
It might have been a little too easy - as it became a tad boring. So I decided it was time to try helix knitting again - this time with more than two colors. Needing some more help with that, I found this video simple and immensely helpful:
Wanting to use up some superwash wool, I gathered the colors I have and started knitting. I wasn't so sure about the colors I put together, but as they all went round and round the whole thing took on very 1960's vibe. The decade of my childhood. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if my little brother had a striped t-shirt with these exact colors. I have no idea if anyone else will like it, but I'm kind of diggin' the retro vibe here:
As I go and contemplate that question, let me leave you a fun video of The Piano Guys. You've very possibly seen it before, but it's so worth watching again:
~~~~~
I've seen the Piano Guys before, they're amazing! And so are your hats! I love the first one. And go for it, start something new if you're itching to do it! :)
ReplyDeleteI think I could watch the Piano Guys all day. I've watched this video 3 or 4 times today! Thank you for your encouragement to start something new. I really do want to. :)
DeleteI had never seen the piano guys. Thanks for that video. Your hats are great and again, thanks for the tutorial video. I love stripped items but dislike the jogged likes. I will be watching the video soon.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Marsha! I hope the tutorial is as clear to you as it was to me - though I have watched several videos on helical knitting so it's possible that it's the combination of watching different ones explain it that made it finally click. It really is (just about) the simplest thing once it does click.
DeleteI love your hats and the retro vibe. I think I might have a t-shirt kicking around somewhere at mum's with those stripes!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lucy! :)
DeleteYour hats look great - very comfy and warm. And I like the 60's vibe - which, truth be told, I think is coming back into vogue again. Thanks for the videos!
ReplyDeleteI'm very nostalgic over 60's anything. We even live in a 1964-built house. If it weren't for the fact that it's a tri-level, and we really want to find a suitable ranch-style house, I think we'd stay here and I'd start decorating it 60's style.
DeleteThose hats are definitely cute. I love the second one and yes, you are so right about the 60s feeling with the multi colored one.
ReplyDeleteThe second one is made with the softest yarn... It's child-sized so maybe there's a youngin' out there who'll appreciate its softness. Or a mama of a youngin'... ;^)
DeleteLOVE all three hats! Ah the perennial question -- finish something or start something new? I look forward to finding out which you decided next week.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Maria. I'm looking forward to finding out, too! :)
DeleteI have recently discovered the Piano guys. They are amazing - so much fun! Good for you with the helix knitting - three hats!! and the last with more than two colours - I am impressed!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mary-Anne. I am too. Impressed with how easy it is! :) I think my striped hat run is only beginning.
DeleteWell my sister had a jumper in brown, yellow and burnt orange stripes and that hat would go perfectly with it. Very retro. I haven’t heard of the Piano Guys before so thanks for sharing the video. I’ve saved the other video to watch when I give it a go myself.
ReplyDeleteI remember a favorite jumper in yellow, orange and brown - it was worn in the 70's though - as I was wearing it in a family photo and I'm sure I was in Jr. High. I think it's the light blue added to those "earth" colors that catapults this color combination back into the 60's. lol
DeleteThese are so cute! I love all of the different colors. Everything old is new again haha! I saw more 60's and 70's style clothes in stores this summer than ever before. Can't say I'd want to wear them again haha but they look cute on the young girls!
ReplyDeleteI remember... it would have been about 15 years ago, I was at a highschool graduation party where the guest of honor was wearing a pair of flip flops - almost identical to those we wore in the 70's (bambo-ish sole with chunky fabric straps that tapered into a cloth thong piece). At the time of this party, I was around 45 years old and I told her I had sandals just like those when I was her age. What I most remember is her looking slightly horrified. I thought it would be a fun bit of information about how fashions come around again - decades later. She didn't seem at all amused.
DeleteFun results!
ReplyDelete:) Hi Stef!
DeleteYour hats look fabulous Becki, I love helix knitting and the colours you chose.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Catherine. :)
DeleteYour hats all turned out great! I love the blue one too. I've made one helix hat that I sent to Grayson in his favorite colors....purples and pinks! My stitching never looks as good as yours. Do you have a secret?
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of The Piano Guys but it was wonderful! I need to include that in my post if you don't mind. It was so wonderful and something new as some of my "old favorites" from days gone by make me sad so new music is good! Thank you!
I don't do anything special, Sam. I think your knitting looks terrific. And you are much more accomplished than I am. That helical knitting is the height of my knitting accomplishments (and I'm totally pumped about it) is testimony to what a simple knitter I am. lol
