Today, I made the decision to part with old bakery decorating candies and colorings and some old paper liners I'm least likely to use. Actually, I decided to only keep the cupcake liners that will fit in a wide mouth mason jar. The ones below just couldn't be squeezed in.
Looking through that round yellow box where most of this had been stored, I quickly realized I hadn't a clue how old anything was in there, and considering that I don't even recall the last time I decorated cookies or cupcakes, I made the happy decision to pitch it all. Next time (if there is a next time) I get a hankering to make decorated cupcakes or cookies, I will buy fresh decorating items, and only what I need - instead of buying this kind of thing when I see it on sale - often after a holiday. I am convinced I have spent far more money purchasing (all kinds of stuff) this way than if I'd just purchased what I needed, when I needed it.
Oh, and the box was stained by some leaking food coloring, so I'm recycling it as well. I've never even particularly liked the box so that's a win, too!
Day 26: 382 things gone
Yup, the kids grow up and decorating goodies are not needed as often. Five more days and our houses will be so much lighter. I am so glad you threw this challenge out this year. Thanks, Becki.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you joined me, Marsha. You have provided much inspiration when it was waning a bit this time around. Now that we're down to the last week, I do believe I'm going to complete this with flying colors again.
DeleteGood for you! I can't recall the last time I ever used anything like this either. Don't have any in the house to begin with so - other than a little 'kit' with 4 different food colourings in that I could probably toss too.
ReplyDeleteThe thing is, I don't dare make cut-out, decorated sugar cookies anymore because we'd eat them all up for sure. And we just mustn't do that. I am hanging onto my cookie cutter collection, though, in the hopes of some day having grandchildren and seeing them marvel over the (by then) vintage shapes and designs of cookies we can make together. Gotta have my dreams. :)
DeleteWe gave our cookie cutters to our son to use for our grandson. Resident Chef doesn't like making 'fancy' cookies so we're leaving that to the next generation to take care of (or not!).
DeleteGosh. Maybe I need to do this, too. I am sure that some of my sprinkles are decades old. Ha!
ReplyDeleteI don't know whether to admit this or not... Okay, I will. When I was dumping out the sugars and candies in order to recycle the plastic, I noted several containers had sell by dates of 2011. Most didn't have dates printed on them, so for all I know some things could have been older than that. The only thing I know for certain is none of it was bought in the last 2-3 years. sigh
DeleteI don't even like to think of the money I have spent on things such as this. Yes, only buy what you need when you need it. I have learned this lesson way too late in life.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way. And regretfully so. :^/
DeleteYes I can relate I buy these things just in case I need them then do the same thing again because I'd forgotten I had already bought some haha the story of my life!
ReplyDeleteIt feels good to know I am not alone in this. ;^)
DeleteCleaning out baking cabinet is like a step back in time.
ReplyDeleteThat's true. There is definitely a nostalgia factor to anything regarding baking sweets.
DeleteIt is amazing how much eventually gets discarded or given away during this type of event. God job.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be kind of fun to see it all in one pile. OTOH, I saw a youtuber who did that and she found it depressing and a little demoralizing, I think. Yeah... best to move it out a bit at a time, I guess.
DeleteSometimes I wish sprinkles came in smaller containers because they may only be used for the holidays.
ReplyDeleteThat would be a very good idea. I'd love being able to buy just the amount I need for a specific purpose.
