Less is more - day 3

First up is today's installment for the 30-Day Minimalism Game. I don't know how many folks have graduation gowns hanging around, but in my circle of homeschoolers, it's not uncommon at all.

But youngest graduated high school over 5 years ago, and college over a year ago, so I think it's time to re-home these.  IOW, no one's coming back for a do-over!  There are also three caps leaving, so I've actually collected six items today.  😀

If you're at all interested in the 30-Day Minimalism Game, you can check it out here!

And since Sunday is also my Year Of Projects update, I have a finished knitted scarf to show for my yarny efforts over the past couple of weeks.

Made with Scarfie yarn.  Not exactly in love with the yarn, but it's nearly two skeins out of my stash, so I gotta love that!

  1. Oh wow! I love that scarf. Incredible job and color is smashing.
I had those robes at my house as well up until a few years ago. I gave them to a church that does a senior Sunday for those that forget or that are home schooled, etc. I remember we turned them in and they were reusable back in the day. Such a waste to have to buy and keep since what do you do with them later.

    1. Thank you, Sandy. The purple in the scarf is pretty. The grayish black, not so much. It's not my favorite, but it does photograph nicely, I'll give it that. ;^)

I actually only bought the blue gown (two sons used it and another friend borrowed it in between sons' graduations). One of the black gowns was a hand-me down when 3rd son needed one. And the second black gown was given to us by a friend when 3rd son needed a costume for something (and he couldn't find his). :/ I'm hoping to find homes for them all by some graduates (probably homeschoolers) who will use them again, but they've all been used multiple times so if I end up donating them to a thrift store, I'm good with that. I'm going to send an e-mail out to my homeschooling contacts and that network is large so hopefully, I'll get a bite. These really weren't that expensive. When I bought the one I did, a whole set (including cap and tassel) was in the $20.00-30.00 range (that's what the price is now where I bought one). I just hope they're biodegrade, 'cuz eventually all the billions of graduation gowns the world over, at some point, end up in landfills Hey! If they're not biodegradable, they'd make great weed barriers in the flower garden!

  2. I love that scarf too - the colours are perfect! Graduation robes - I don't suppose everyone has those. First thing I thought when I saw them was how much great fabric was there!!

    1. Thanks, Mary Anne. Re: the gowns... the fabric isn't something I'd make anything wearable out of, but if I could think of something to use the fabric for I'd sure do it. I'm open to ideas!

    2. Being a crazy quilter I would be using them for foundations, and I would also cut the fabric up to use as backings for my landscapes.

    3. Aaah... that idea wouldn't have occurred to me!

  3. I think my mum has my wedding dress from my first marriage and my sister’s wedding dress from her first marriage in her loft (attic)! My sister’s been married to husband #2 for nearly 20 years. She could definitely do with following this less is more you are doing. 😉

    1. Ooooh... I forgot I still have my wedding dress. I think. I haven't seen the dress since 1980 when it was sealed up in a box. lol I wonder if it's in the attic or garage? Or I wonder if I got rid of it sometime in the last few years when I do recall I considered doing so. Sealing it up guaranteed that it would become something that would be hard to re-home. And my dress wasn't even a heirloom type dress. I have this vague recollection that it was polyester! Or something like that. The things we do to ourselves!

  4. You are doing very well with your daily less is more challenge. I am enjoying watching your home get lighter each day. I think the scarf is lovely. It looks nice and warm as well as squishy too.

    1. Thanks for the encouragement, Marsha. I'm sure at some point, I'll probably move to some smaller, less significant items, but it all counts doesn't it!?!

  5. Okay...I love that scarf! What's the pattern? Maybe I need a new camera? Everyone's projects look so great and when I photograph mine....not so much. I have been crocheting and knitting for quite awhile so you would think I would be fairly good by now. I think it's the camera! LOL!
Yes, ditch the gowns....I rented mine and the wedding dresses are long gone as are the husbands! LOL! Have a great week!

  6. I love the colour of the scarf - but then, purple is my thing! Yeah for two more skeins out of your stash. I had a chuckle over the graduation gowns - I am really enjoying following your de-cluttering NaBloPoMo. Can't wait to see what is going out next!
